DONNELLY DOUBLE TOP AT CROFT

BRENTWOOD, May 8, 2005: Charlie Donnelly mastered the tricky weather conditions to claim a UK Formula Ford Championship double at Croft today (Sunday). In doing so, the Irishman opened up a 26-point lead at the head of the championship table over Joe D’Agostino, who finished third and second in the two races at the North Yorkshire venue.

Dubliner Donnelly started in second position on the grid for the first race but a better getaway enabled him to power ahead of pole sitter D’Agostino as the field charged into the first corner. Although a mistake exiting the Chicane allowed D’Agostino to close briefly, the Brackley-based American dropped to fifth when he ran wide coming out of the sweeping Barcroft turn and Donnelly took a controlled victory by more than six seconds.

“It was very slippery at the start,” said 21-year-old Donnelly. “There was more grip on the side of the grid I was on. I used less revs, which gave me better drive, and I was able to get ahead of Joe. It was a real team performance because we’ve worked very hard to improve the wet set-up. I had a few moments at the start but I got my head down and was able to pull away. I’m very happy.”

It took Donnelly until the fourth lap of race two before he was able to demote Brackley-based D’Agostino to second thanks to a better exit out of the Chicane. Once ahead, Donnelly’s superiority in the conditions again told as he extended his advantage to nearly six seconds to score his third win of the season.

D’Agostino’s off-track moment on the first lap of race one gave second place to Duncan Tappy (West Ewell). But Tappy was soon under pressure from Robert Sunderland, who dived down on the inside at Tower Bend on lap two. But the Yatton Keynell racer carried too much speed into the corner and Tappy was able to retake the place on the exit.

As Tappy and Sunderland scrapped, newcomer Andrew Bentley (Barnard Castle) and his recovering Team JLR stable mate D’Agostino began to close up to Sunderland’s gearbox. Despite the pressure from behind, Sunderland was attempting to overtake Tappy and he shot down his inside at Clervaux on lap four after getting a better exit out of the Hairpin.

As Sunderland quickly pulled clear in second, Tappy – running on older wet-weather tyres – fell into the clutches of Bentley who planted the nose of his Van Diemen down the inside of Tappy’s Mygale at Tower. But, like Sunderland a few laps earlier, Bentley ran wide and his loss of momentum was enough to let D’Agostino through into fourth behind Tappy.

Tappy, who suffered the misery of retiring from the two previous rounds at Oulton Park, was in the wars again when he ran out of road at Tower and ploughed through the damp grass on lap six. He eventually rejoined in last position, his challenge over.

Although Bentley dropped back in the closing stages his fourth place was richly deserved, especially as he had to sell his road car to fund his race weekend. His opening lap charge took him from eighth to fourth.
Despite two spins Stephen Roberts (Whitchurch) got his challenge for the Scholarship Cup back on track by taking the class win in fifth position overall although a late spin almost gifted the place to Lincolnshire racer Philip Glew, who had been drafted into the Clifford White Racing line-up as a last-minute replacement for Liam Clifford.
Norway’s Christian Ebbesvik made up for an off-track moment in the pre-race test to claim seventh ahead of Jonny Baker (Farnham Common), who also spun twice in the race. Sarah Playfair (East Lothian) took the chequered flag in ninth despite a spin at the Jim Clark Esses on the final lap.

Behind Donnelly and D’Agostino in the second race, Tappy avenged his earlier misfortune with third place from Sunderland and Bentley, who was unable to repeat the stunning opening lap he produced in race one.

Philip Glew was sixth ahead of Christian Ebbesvik, who had fended off Darwin Smith (Ballymena) until Smith retired is ill-handling Spirit, the legacy of contact at the first corner, which caused him to spin. Smith had been out of luck in race one too after running out of road at Tower and piling through the grass. He had to pit to clear mud out of his radiators but elected to return to the pits when his car began to lose performance.

Jonny Baker took the Scholarship Cup honours in race two from Roberts and Playfair, who again spun, this time exiting Tower on lap three.

The next rounds of the UK Formula Ford Championship are at Knockhill in a fortnight’s time.
